UFC 189: McGregor TKO's Mendes to win the interim featherweight title

Conor McGregor told anyone who would listen that he was going to beat Chad "Money" Mendes. In the main event at UFC 189 Saturday night, he backed up the talk with a second-round TKO win over Mendes in the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
UFC on Fox Sports tweeted out the result:
Those who said Mendes could take down McGregor were proven correct rather quickly. Those who said McGregor could spring right back up were also correct. Mendes got McGregor to the mat early in the first round, but The Notorious One worked to his feet and the fight went back to stand-up exchanges.
The takedowns weren't done yet, though. Mendes went on to take down McGregor twice more in the opening frame. He ended the round on top and doing damage to a bloodied McGregor.
Mendes once again went to the wrestling in the second frame. After McGregor landed a few strikes on the feet, Mendes scored another takedown and went to work with elbows to McGregor.
The knockout power of McGregor proved to be too much, though. After the two fighters scrambled to their feet late in the second round, McGregor started throwing combinations with a great sense of urgency. Mendes had the early edge, but the 26-year-old Irishman got the decisive blow when he caught his opponent with a left-handed punch to the jaw. Mendes fell to the floor, ultimately causing Herb Dean to call an end to the fight.
"I knew I was going to prove to people I’m a true fighter. It doesn’t matter who it is," McGregor said after the fight, per MMAFighting.com.
The win marks the official dawning of a UFC star in McGregor. The Irishman has everything a fighter needs to become a cash cow for the organization—a divisive personality, endless confidence and an exciting fighting style that saw him finish four out of his five UFC opponents in the lead up to this fight.
As Bleacher Report UK noted, the man can even fill out a venue to watch him stand on a scale:
Now, he can add the ability to beat a wrestler to his resume.
After all, that was the question on everyone's mind heading into the match. The dynamic striker had never seen a wrestler of Mendes' caliber. McGregor was comfortable with the questions, though.
"This is part of the business. People want questions answered,” McGregor said per Tristen Critchfield of Sherdog.com. “That’s what makes money. People are interested to see. I’m happy that people have questions. If they didn’t have these questions, it wouldn’t generate as much interest. It’s part of the game, and I’m OK with it.”
The questions for McGregor aren't done yet, though. In fact, the biggest one still looms: Is he better than featherweight champion Jose Aldo?
The Brazilian was supposed to be McGregor's opponent Saturday, but an unfortunate rib injury forced him off the card.
It's a question that will ultimately be answered. Dana White shed some light on the plans for McGregor going forward, per MMA Fighting:

The Irishman's victory will only make Aldo-McGregor an even bigger affair than it was before. Heading into UFC 189, it was about the bad blood between the two. There was still some mystery as to whether McGregor was truly an elite fighter.
Now that question is out the window. Interim titles might not mean much, but in this case, it's a symbol of McGregor's legitimacy. With the added intrigue of McGregor proving himself against a quality opponent like Mendes, the anticipation for Aldo-McGregor goes through the roof.
The Irishman should be savoring the opportunity to once again answer people's questions.

New ‘Batman v. Superman’ trailer rocks eager fans

NOT MUCH is riding on this. Except the entire future of DC Entertainment’s cinematic universe.

Warner Bros. and DC screened the new “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” trailer Saturday afternoon at Comic Con, with the hopes that the 2016 movie not only successfully launches the DC cinematic universe, but also finally vaults DC into a true space race with Marvel’s live-action movie universe.
So in dissecting today’s trailer, where do we begin? How about with a world that is divided over how it feels about Superman?
The trailer begins with Superman attending a Washington-style hearing, as he aims to explain the destruction resulting from his battle with General Zod in “Man of Steel.” Superman saved the world, but not without many lost lives. Now, many politicians are wondering whether his presence is endangering civilians.
Speaking of Kal-El’s battle with Zod in “Man of Steel”: It seems one survivor of the mass destruction of Metropolis was none other than Bruce Wayne. We see what seems to be a flashback scene of Superman and Zod’s battle. We see heat vision flying everywhere, and an angry Bruce Wayne looking toward the sky, with a expression that says he’s none too fond of Kryptonians.
Oh, and did we mention Zod? His dead body shows up. But who is experimenting on it, and what will be the result of those experiments?
Bruce Wayne is convinced that Superman by himself can destroy all of humanity, and that a power like that must be stopped. The one voice of reason trying to convince Batfleck that Superman isn’t the problem/enemy, though, is Alfred.

Meanwhile, when Clark isn’t getting chewed out by Daily Planet editor Perry White for writing too many stories on the Bat-vigilante in Gotham, Clark’s Earth mother, Martha, is looking him in the eyes and telling him he doesn’t owe the world anything.
Plus, we finally get a look (albeit a quick one) at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. She’s in action, slamming her two bracelets together — the impact of which suggests that she’s of equal strength to the Man of Steel. Indeed, Gadot looks the part as one of comics’ most important woman warriors. (Side note: There are no hints of a romance with Batman, but then it’s a trailer, so we can’t expect everything.)
Robin the Boy Wonder makes a surprise appearance in the Batcave. Well, his suit does, anyway. It hangs in what appears to be a tribute glass case. The suit has a spray-painted message to Batman, saying he was too late.
Hmm. Could this be a hint of what’s to come in a future solo Batman flick? We know that Jared Leto’s Joker will make his debut in “Suicide Squad.” Will a new Batman film focus on Batman’s effort to get the Clown Prince of Crime, to avenge the death of Robin? And could we see the Red Hood in the DCU live-action universe? The trailer intrigues…
And what about Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) and those locks? Is it a wig? We know that Lex will eventually be bald? Will it be due to Kryptonite poisoning? The deadly green rock also made a debut in the trailer.
As trailer concludes, we see Superman ripping open the Batmobile — and Batman standing up for an epic staredown. Yes, the Justice League is coming. Yes, this movie is the “dawn” of some of the greatest superheroes ever coming together. But first, there’s going to be a battle.
As Lex says: “ Black vs. blue. God vs. man. Day vs. night.”
By dialing up the duality with expert tension, the “Batman v. Superman” trailer does the geeked-up audience justice.

Wimbledon 2015: Serena Williams wins title as 'Serena Slam' - Serena Williams wins sixth Wimbledon singles title

Serena Williams wins sixth Wimbledon singles title

  • Williams holds all four grand slam titles
  • Andy Murray's brother Jamie loses in men's doubles final
  • Martina Hingis wins women's doubles with Sania Mirza

Grand Slam bid

If the American triumphs at the U.S. Open -- and the odds might be stacked in her favor given the 33-year-old is the three-time defending champion -- she would become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete the calendar-year grand slam.
A victory would, too, draw the world No. 1 level with Graf on an Open Era leading 22 majors.
It didn't take long, Williams admitted, before New York crept into her mind.
"I did the whole presentation, I did the whole walk around the court," said Williams. "I was peaceful, feeling really good. Maybe a little after that I started thinking about New York."
Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, made an early request to U.S. fans to back Williams in September.
"I think if the crowd helps her, it's going to be a plus," the Frenchman told a small group of reporters. "So of course I expect the American crowd to be the best ever for her because to have an American player like her who is probably the greatest (in) history writing history at the U.S. Open is huge, and I hope the American crowd will be so proud of that that they will help her."

Royal baby girl: Kate Middleton gives birth to the Princess the nation had longed for

The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her baby daughter to the waiting world on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington

Kate and Will set to name the baby: live
The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her sleeping beauty to the waiting world on Saturday after giving birth to the baby Princess the whole nation had been longing for.
The newest member of the Royal family, born at 8.34am and weighing 8lbs 3oz, slept right through her big moment as a beaming Duke and Duchess introduced her to the waiting world.
Covered in a shawl and with a bonnet over her head to protect her from the early evening chill, Princess Cambridge, who has not yet been given a name, arrived just 154 minutes after the Duchess, 33, had been admitted to the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.
“She’s fast asleep,” said the Duchess to her husband.
The Duke of Cambridge said he and his wife were “very, very pleased”, but after their exhausting day, which had started with the Duchess’s admission to hospital at 6am, they seemed in a hurry to get home to Kensington Palace, and did not answer questions from the media.
The Duchess, wearing a bespoke yellow and white silk shift dress with buttercup print by Jenny Packham, still had a pronounced baby bump as she said “hello” and waved to a cheering crowd, but looked incredibly fresh, having had a visit in the hospital from her hairdresser, Amanda Cook Tucker.
The Duke had told his wife to “be careful” as she approached the steps of the Lindo Wing. Once she had safely negotiated them she looked up and said to him: “This is nice. Lots of people out there. Look up there on the top.”
Then, looking at her daughter, she said: “Do you think she’s cold?” The Duke replied: “No, she’s fine, she’s good.” The Duchess, still looking a little concerned, said: “Let’s take her inside.”
By the time they left the hospital, the Princess had already been introduced to her big brother, Prince George, who was taken into the Lindo Wing by his proud father earlier in the afternoon.

George, as ever, almost stole the show with his appearance, the first time he has “officially” been seen by members of the public in the UK since the day after his birth.
The Duke drove his Range Rover to Kensington Palace to pick him up, returning minutes later and carrying him into the hospital as George obediently waved to the smitten crowd, earning a kiss from his father.
Dressed all in blue, like his son, the Duke told him “good boy” as he carried him inside to meet his little sister.

The Duke of Cambridge, who said even before Prince George was born that he longed for a daughter, the Prince of Wales, who said earlier this week that he was “hoping for a granddaughter”, and the Duchess herself, who also wanted a girl, all got their heart’s desire.
The rest of the country seemed to be in tune with them, judging by the thousands of bets that were placed on the baby being a girl. In fact the only people who did not want a girl were the bookies, who now face collective payouts of £500,000 after the public guessed right.
The baby is the most senior princess to be born into the Royal family since the Princess Royal in 1950, and is now the fourth in line to the throne, after the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince George. It means Prince Harry drops down to fifth in line, with every other member of the Royal family also moving down one place.
The baby will be known as Princess [name] of Cambridge, following a rule change brought in by the Queen when the Duchess was pregnant with Prince George. Before the Queen issued new instructions, she would have been given the title “Lady”.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall said they were "absolutely delighted" by the arrival of the new princess. They were thought to have met her at Kensington Palace last night, together with the Duchess’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton, who were seen arriving at the Palace earlier in the day.
The Duchess, who was nine days overdue, was admitted to hospital at 6am, and at 11.07 came the official announcement that she had given birth swiftly and safely.
Kensington Palace said in a statement: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.
“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

The announcement was made to the media shortly before it appeared on Kensington Palace’s official Twitter feed, as has now become traditional.
It was followed 90 minutes later by the quaint if antiquated formal announcement of the birth on a piece of paper placed on an easel outside Buckingham Palace by duty footmen George Oates, 26, and Simon Garnett, 30.
Tourists who had been at the Palace for the Changing of the Guard quickly formed a queue to take their own pictures of the proclamation.
Among those who had already been told of the birth before the public were Prince Harry, who is in Australia on secondment to the Australian army, and the Queen, who was in Richmond, North Yorkshire with her son the Duke of York to mark the formation of the new Royal Lancers regiment.
David Cameron was among the first to congratulate the couple, saying on Twitter: “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their baby girl. I'm absolutely delighted for them.”
    (Rupert Hartley)
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, said: "It's wonderful news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a healthy new baby girl.
"Like many here and abroad, I'm delighted for the royal couple on this special day. May God bless them and both of their children with love, health and joy."
President Barack Obama, who has met the Duke and Duchess, said: “Michelle and I are delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family, and all the people of the United Kingdom on the birth of the Royal Princess. On behalf of the American people, we wish the Duke and Duchess and their son George much joy and happiness on the occasion of the arrival of the newest member of their family.”
Outside the Lindo Wing, news of the baby’s birth seemed to overwhelm the royal “superfans” who had been camped out for weeks on the pavement so they could have a grandstand view of the baby’s first public appearance.
The Queen dressed all in pink (PA)
Cheering broke out, and Terry Hutt, who celebrated his 80th birthday outside the hospital earlier in the week, said: "I'm so excited that I can't talk to you all that much.
"It's been a long wait but it's all been worth it."
Attention has already turned to what the Duke and Duchess will call the baby, with Alice the 7/4 favourite at Ladbrokes, Charlotte at 3/1 and Victoria at 5/1, but Olivia making a surprise appearance as the third favourite with William Hill, at 5/1, after a rash of bets on the name following the birth.
The Princess’s birth will also be celebrated by the nation’s fashion retailers, who can expect to make up to £150 million per year when she is older as a result of the intense interest there will be in her style sense.
The first company to benefit from the Princess Cambridge effect was GH Hurt and Son Ltd, the company that made the shawl in which the baby was wrapped when she was carried out by the Duchess.
The formal announcement is placed outside Buckingham Palace (PA)
The company has a long-standing connection with the Royal family and Prince George and The Duke of Cambridge had a similar shawls when they were babies.
As well as being the most senior Princess born for 65 years, the baby is also the first Princess born into the Royal family since Eugenie in 1990, and the first to be born in the age of Twitter, social media and 24-hour news. The Duke and Duchess will undoubtedly be determined to shield her from the intense interest there will be in her as she grows up.
The Queen dressed all in pink for her engagement in Richmond, while national landmarks including Tower Bridge were lit in the same colour and the BT Tower announced “It’s a Girl!” on a giant circular screen around its top.
On a day of surprises, it was the appearance of Prince George that was the most unexpected. The Duke and Duchess are fiercely protective of him, and have never taken him to an official engagement in Britain, but the Duke was clearly in the mood to show off his son and make sure he got his own share of the attention as he picked him up from Kensington Palace.
Back home with the Duke at the wheel
The Duke put his son on the pavement, but after George toddled no more than three steps he reached his arms up and his father picked him up, carrying him to the door as the public waiting on the pavement opposite screamed their approval.
As he put him on the ground and then picked him again, he said to his son: "Look at everybody."
Then he encouraged him to wave, adding: "Can you wave to everybody. Say hello..wave."
He added: "That's a good boy. Wave."
But for those in the crowd who had hoped to see George posing with his mother, father and sister, there was disappointment: Prince George was taken home via a rear entrance of the hospital, perhaps to save that historic picture for another day.
Minutes after the couple first appeared, and having thanked hospital staff, the couple re-emerged, the Duke carrying his daughter in a Britax car seat which he strapped into the back of his Range Rover, before he took the wheel and drove home. The couple were back inside Kensington Palace just twelve and a half hours after they had left.
They will remain there for “a couple of days” before heading to Norfolk and their country mansion Anmer Hall, where they will spend the rest of the month relaxing and getting to know their new daughter before the Duke returns to air ambulance pilot training at the start of June.
The last word of the day came via the Kensington Palace Twitter feed, which published a close-up picture of the Princess with the message: “Welcome to the family.”

Hedge funds bet big on Ladbrokes

Hedge funds have ramped up their bets against beleaguered bookmaker Ladbrokes ahead of this week’s general election, which could deal a blow to the company.

The proportion of Ladbrokes shares out on loan – a proxy for short-selling – has risen to 8.9pc, hitting its highest level since October 2013, according to financial data firm Markit.
The level of share borrowing suggests the FTSE 250 company is the seventh most-shorted stock in the mid-cap index. Short-sellers try to profit from stocks they reckon will fall by borrowing shares from other investors and selling them. They aim to buy them back at a lower price and take the difference before returning the shares to the original owner.
Jefferies analyst James Letten said hedge funds were probably raising their short positions as a bet that the Labour Party will gain power at this week’s general election. Labour have pledged to crack-down on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs), which critics call the “crack cocaine” of gambling, to which Ladbrokes has “massive exposure”, Mr Letten said.
Rival William Hill is less exposed to FOBTs, and the proportion of its shares on loan is smaller, at 1.3pc, although that is up from 0.6pc at the start of April.
A Labour attack on FOBTs would add to the task facing Ladbrokes boss Jim Mullen, who was formerly its head of digital operations and took the helm last month. First-quarter results less than a fortnight ago showed pre-tax profits excluding one-offs fell to £14.3m from £35.6m in the last three months of 2014.

55-year-old Freddie Roach began his career as cornerman in 1986, under the tutelage of renowned boxing trainer Eddie Futch. Since then, Roach has gone on to train 27 world champions including Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, and Mike Tyson.
Roach is an offensive-minded trainer who prefer his fighters press forward and exchange, instead of “hitting and not getting hit.” He has a reputation for reinventing established boxers and helping them take their fight game to the next level.
When Manny Pacquiao came to Roach, he was one-armed brawler relying solely on his left hand to oust his opponents. Roach turned Pacquiao into one of the most complete boxers in the sport.
“Roach is clearly the best trainer in boxing today,” wrote regarded Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole. “That goes without question.”

In 1990, Roach began showing symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system that gradually affects movement.
“I shake a little bit, which is embarrassing, and I can’t walk that well,” Roach told the Guardian. “But once I get into the ring I can go all day, Some doctors say that the damage is done, that it can be maintained at this level. Others tell me it’ll get a lot worse. It is part of my life now and I just have to live with it. Some people just want to lay down and die, but not me. I’m a fighter.”

Growing up in Dedham, Massachusetts, Freddie and his brothers Pepper and Joey were taught the sweet science of bruising by their old man, Paul Roach, himself a New England featherweight champion in 1947. Having taken the boys as far as he could, Roach Sr put them under the charge of New England trainer Tariq Nasiri.
Known as the ‘The Choir Boy’ back then, 5-foot 5-inches tall Freddie turned professional in 1978 and went on to win his first 10 fights. By the time Roach retired at age 26, he had professional record of 40-13, with 15 victories by way of knockout.
In 1986 Roach unsuccessfully challenged Darryl Tyson for the WBC Continental Americas lightweight title. His last fight  was in 1986 against palooka David Rivello.
“I tried to be the world champion as best I could, but I came up short,” Roach told Hollywood Reporter. “So I was a little disappointed. But then I found something that I do better than boxing, and that’s training.”

Freddie Roach doesn’t limit himself to training boxers.Since 2008, Roach has been taking MMA fighters under his charge and finding success in the octagon. Since working with Andrei Arlovskiin preparation for his fight against Ben Rothwell, Roach has seen a steady stream of MMA’ers coming through his gym, including Georges St. Pierre,  BJ Penn,Anderson Silva, Dan Hardy, Tito Ortiz, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
“The thing is I have to make adjustments a little bit sometimes because obviously you know the stance is different and the distance is different and then that’s the most difficult thing,” Roach told Yahoo Sports. “Because sometimes a boxer will get a little bit closer than an MMA fighter will because of the striking with the legs of course. It’s small adjustments, but I’m learning how to make those adjustments.”
